COVID-19 & Climate Change: Contemplating the Connected Crises
The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global halt in unnecessary travel, temporary closings of businesses and factories, postponements of events and gatherings, and more to “flatten the curve” of this deadly virus. This has inadvertently led to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere created by the burning of fossil fuels. Climate change impacts everyone on earth, similar to the pandemic. We must be mindful of the generations to come and leave this earth in a state where they can understand the importance of taking care of it, can enjoy what beauty it has to offer, and live without fear of it becoming uninhabitable, because there is no plan(et) B. Societies should be open to investigating the questions the pandemic has posed, and consciously direct recovery efforts toward a more equitable and sustainable future in order to avoid emerging from one crisis only to plunge deeper into another.
